The Republic of Maldives, with a total population of more than 400,000, is one of the countries at high risk of novel coronavirus (COVID-19). As the pandemic spreads worldwide, many countries have closed their borders and restricted international flights and commodity exports. For Maldives, which is largely dependent on imports, the shortage of anti-pandemic supplies has become an urgent problem.

On March 27, the Chinese embassy in Maldives summoned local Chinese companies to discuss issues on delivering medical supplies for pandemic prevention from China by chartered airplane. In view of the comprehensive strengths of China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), the embassy asked CMEC’s house-building project department to undertake the transportation task.

CMEC chose Suparna Airlines Company to work together to ensure smooth transportation and designated a direct flight from Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong province, to Maldives. The embassy also coordinated with the Chinese Ministry of Commerce and the Chinese General Administration of Customs to open a green channel for the declaration of pandemic prevention materials to Maldives to facilitate the secured express delivery.

After more than a month of preparation, flight B2115, loaded with emergency aid, headed for Maldives on May 2, and landed smoothly after a 10-hour flight.

Abdulla Shahid, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives, noted that whenever Maldives encounters difficulties and challenges, the Chinese government and people always give a helping hand. Shahid added that in the face of the coronavirus pandemic the Chinese government and people stand with Maldives once more. The world is bound to win the fight against the pandemic although the road ahead may be fraught with difficulties.
